Smol Developer started as one of the earliest standalone give-it-a-prompt, get-a-codebase CLI tools, back when that idea was still novel, and was later rewritten to be smaller and importable as a library rather than only a standalone command. That shift reflects its current purpose: letting other developers embed a junior-developer-style agent into their own applications rather than using Smol as an end product itself.
Given a specification, it drafts a file plan, generates code file by file, and helps with debugging along the way, following a human-in-the-loop workflow rather than running fully unsupervised. That incremental, file-by-file approach was notable early on for handling tasks too large to generate in one single model call.
With around 12,200 GitHub stars, it remains a widely referenced project in discussions of early agentic coding tools, even as the specific use case of generating a whole codebase from one prompt has since been absorbed by larger, better-funded products like Bolt and Lovable.
