Experimental CLI toolkit that walks a git repository and generates markdown documentation for every file and folder, queryable in natural language.

Autodoc, built by Context Labs, is a command-line toolkit that traverses a Git repository and calls an LLM, originally GPT-4 or Alpaca, to generate markdown documentation summaries at both the file and folder level. Setup takes roughly five minutes, and the resulting documentation is versioned alongside the code itself rather than living in a separate wiki that drifts out of sync.

Beyond generating static docs, it supports an interactive query mode, doc q, that answers natural-language questions about the codebase with responses linked directly back to the relevant source files, functioning as a lightweight alternative to manually searching through generated documentation.

The project is explicitly early-stage and experimental, with performance varying depending on code complexity and which model is used, and the maintainers recommend GPT-4 specifically for best results. It's a reasonable tool to try for a side project, less so for anything that needs guaranteed documentation quality in production.
