GPT Engineer was one of the first widely-used tools built around a simple, ambitious idea: write a specification in a prompt file, and let the tool ask clarifying questions and generate a working codebase from it. It was MIT licensed and built around a modular steps.py architecture that let developers customize the generation workflow, supported vision-capable prompts, and logged execution steps so a run could be resumed rather than restarted from scratch.
It worked with OpenAI's GPT-4 and compatible open models, and for a while was one of the most-watched repositories in the early AI-writes-your-whole-app category, well before that idea became commonplace. Its creator, Anton Osika, later co-founded Lovable, building many of the same underlying ideas into a polished, commercial AI app builder with a browser interface instead of a CLI.
The original GPT Engineer repository was archived in April 2026, with its creator's attention and the broader market's having clearly moved to commercial successors like Lovable rather than the open-source CLI tool.
