Genie AI is a Visual Studio Code extension that wraps OpenAI's GPT-4o, GPT-4 Turbo, and the o1 reasoning models in an editor-native chat interface. It streams responses, writes and explains code, generates commit messages from a diff, and can detect bugs, all through the command palette, right-click menus, or the Problems panel.
Conversation history persists between sessions, system prompts are customizable, and it supports Azure OpenAI for teams that need an enterprise deployment of the same models. When a response gets cut off mid-generation, it can auto-continue rather than forcing a re-prompt from scratch.
With roughly 1,300 GitHub stars and reportedly close to a million Marketplace installs, it's a smaller name than Copilot or Cursor but has built a loyal base of VS Code users who specifically want direct access to OpenAI's models rather than a vendor's own wrapper around them.
