Unified API and marketplace for LLMs, routing requests to the best available provider for a given model and handling failover automatically across dozens of providers.

OpenRouter solves a problem that gets more annoying the more model providers a team wants to use: instead of integrating separately with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, and every open-model hosting provider, one API and one set of credentials gives access to models from all of them, with OpenRouter routing each request to whichever underlying provider is actually serving that model at the best price or availability at the time.

That routing includes automatic failover: if one provider hosting a given open model is down or overloaded, requests shift to another provider offering the same model without the application needing to handle that logic itself. It also normalizes pricing and billing across providers that each have their own pricing quirks, giving a single consolidated view of spend regardless of how many underlying providers are actually being used.

Pricing passes through the underlying provider's cost plus a small markup, free of a separate subscription, which has made it popular specifically with developers who want model flexibility, trying a new model the day it launches without a new API integration, without taking on the engineering cost of maintaining direct integrations with a dozen separate providers.
