Plandex is built specifically for coding tasks too large or too multi-step for most AI assistants to handle well: it supports context windows up to 2 million tokens and can index more than 20 million tokens total, using tree-sitter maps to navigate large codebases without losing track of how files relate to each other.
Its diff review sandbox keeps AI-generated changes isolated until a developer approves them, offering a choice between full autonomy, where Plandex plans, generates, executes, and debugs code on its own, or a step-by-step workflow with manual review at each stage. It supports a hybrid multi-model approach, mixing Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and open-source models to balance speed, cost, and quality rather than committing to one provider.
Plandex Cloud wound down in October 2025, so it's now self-hosted only, which narrows its audience to developers and teams comfortable running their own infrastructure, a real but smaller group than the one a hosted option would reach.
