Gemini Code Assist is Google's AI coding assistant, built on the Gemini 2.x model family and integrated into VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Android Studio, GitHub, Cloud Shell, and the terminal through Gemini CLI. It covers intelligent code completion, code generation, debugging support, chat-based help, and automatic pull request reviews.
Its grounding in BigQuery and Firebase makes it a natural fit for developers already working inside Google Cloud's ecosystem, where Code Assist can reason about infrastructure and data alongside the code itself rather than treating them as unrelated. MCP support lets it connect to external tools and data sources the same way other agentic coding assistants do.
Google dropped the free individual tier for Code Assist in June 2026, steering individual developers toward Antigravity instead and repositioning Code Assist more squarely as a premium, enterprise-oriented product within Google Cloud's broader developer tooling lineup.
